Ma Zhiyuan 马致远 (馬致遠, W-G: Ma Chih-yüan) (c.1250–c.1324) Yuan period colloquial *sanqu writer and playwright. A talented and productive writer, Ma Zhiyuan wrote fifteen plays, seven of which have survived. He is also best known for his sanqu, of which 104 pieces and seventeen song sets are extant. His simple but descriptive autumn scene ‘Tian jing sha: Qiu si’ 天净沙:秋思 (Clear Sky over the Sand: Autumn Thoughts) enjoyed great popularity over the centuries. However, recent research attributes the authorship to an anonymous poet. His best-known plays include Hangong qiu 汉宫秋 (Autumn in the Han Palace), which dramatizes the story of the palace lady Wang Zhaojun’s marriage to the Khagan of the Xiongnu, and Qinshan lei 青衫泪 (Tears on the Blue Robe), a love triangle among a scholar, a merchant, and a female entertainer.
